Luxury beach and island resorts

Beach & Islands

Beach and island trips work a little differently on this site. Rather than a country guide, this is a short list of hotels we would send friends to, spread across the Indian Ocean, Hawaii, Mexico and the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, Southeast Asia and Brazil. Some are on islands of their own, some are small family places, and a few are long-established resorts that have kept their standards for decades.

What they share is simple. Each one has a strong setting, whether that is a reef-fringed island, a quiet cove or a beach below green hills. The water is the point, so we look closely at the snorkeling, the beach and the boats. And each feels like the place it is in, with food, design and staff rooted in the island or coast around it.

Many of our beach trips start with a safari. A few nights in Zanzibar, Mozambique, the Seychelles or Mauritius after a week in the bush is one of the easiest ways to finish a trip to Africa. Use the list below as a starting point and we can build the route around it.

Why Plan With Us

At beach hotels, the villa matters as much as the hotel. Beachfront or over the water, the sunrise or sunset side, near the kids' club or at the quiet end of the island: each choice changes the stay. Seaplane, boat and light-aircraft transfers also have to line up with international flights, and the best villas for school holidays go many months ahead. We help you choose hotels, villas and seasons, pair them with a safari or a city, book the hotels and transfers, and are your point of contact before and during the trip.

As Fora advisors, we can often add perks through Fora Reserve and hotel brands' own advisor programs, such as daily breakfast, a hotel credit or an upgrade when one is free, at many properties where available.

Conservation

Beach and island travel depends on healthy reefs, seagrass and nesting beaches. A few habits make a real difference.

  • Choose hotels that look after the water. Several of the hotels we use sit in or next to protected areas, such as the Bazaruto Archipelago National Park in Mozambique and Baa Atoll in the Maldives, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2011. Others fund reef restoration, turtle monitoring or the rewilding of their islands, and we favor them.
  • Keep off the coral and use mineral sunscreen. Hawaii has banned the sale of sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate since 2021. Wear a rash guard, do not stand on or touch coral, and give turtles, rays and seals plenty of room.
  • Stay longer and fly less. Islands take a lot of flying to reach. One longer stay after a safari, rather than several short hops, cuts flights and seaplane transfers.
  • Spend locally. Eat in local restaurants, hire local guides and boat captains, and buy from island producers, so more of what you spend stays on the island.

When to Go

  • Match the beach to the safari month. The dry season in East and Southern Africa, roughly June to October, lines up well with Zanzibar, Mozambique, the Seychelles and Mauritius. Our guide to beach after safari has the details.
  • Watch the wind as well as the rain. Trade winds and monsoons decide which side of an island is calm. On Mauritius the west coast is more sheltered in the southern winter, and in the Seychelles the calmest seas are usually in April, May, October and November.
  • Book school holidays early. Christmas, New Year, Presidents' Day week, spring break and Easter fill the family villas in the Maldives, the Caribbean and Hawaii many months ahead.
  • Plan around storm seasons. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November and peaks from August to October. The southwest Indian Ocean has its cyclone season from about November to April, with most of the risk from January to March.
  • Check seasonal openings. Most Mediterranean resort hotels close from about November to April, and some Caribbean hotels close for part of September and October.
  • Allow for the last leg. Seaplanes in the Maldives fly in daylight only, and many island boat transfers stop at dusk, so a late arrival can mean a night near the airport.

Somewhere on this list is in season every month of the year. Here is how the main regions fall.

Indian Ocean

The Maldives is best from December to April, in the dry northeast monsoon. Zanzibar is best from June to October and again from December to February, with the long rains in April and May. Mozambique's Bazaruto Archipelago is best in the dry months from May to November. The Seychelles is good all year. Mauritius is best from April to June and September to December, while January to March is hot, humid and the main cyclone risk.

Hawaii

Good all year. December to April is humpback whale season off Maui and the Big Island, and the north-facing shores get big winter surf. Summer brings calmer seas and dry days on the leeward coasts where most resorts are.

Mexico and the Caribbean

December to April is the dry season and the peak. Humpback whales winter off Los Cabos and Punta Mita from about December to March. The hurricane season runs from June to November. On Mexico's Caribbean coast, seaweed called sargassum can wash up on the beaches, mostly from spring through summer.

The Mediterranean

May to October, with June and September the best months. The sea is warmest from July to September, and most resort hotels close from November to April.

Southeast Asia

On Thailand's Andaman coast, including Phuket and Phang Nga Bay, the dry season runs from about November to April. The southwest monsoon brings rain and rougher seas from about May to October.

Brazil

Rio is warm all year. December to March is hot and humid, with New Year and Carnival the busiest weeks. April to October is milder and drier, and lines up with jaguar season in the Pantanal from about July to October.

Month by month

  • January: Excellent. Dry season in the Maldives, the Caribbean, Mexico and Thailand, and whale season in Hawaii. Zanzibar is hot and dry. Mauritius and Mozambique are in cyclone season, and Mediterranean hotels are closed.
  • February: Excellent. The Maldives, the Caribbean, Mexico, Thailand and Hawaii are all at their best. Zanzibar is still dry and pairs with calving season in the Serengeti. Carnival in Rio falls in February or early March.
  • March: Very good. Still dry in the Maldives, the Caribbean, Mexico and Thailand, with the last of the whales in Hawaii. Mauritius and Mozambique remain in cyclone season, and Easter can fall late in the month.
  • April: Very good. The Maldives, the Caribbean and Mexico are still good, and the Seychelles is calm. Long rains start in Zanzibar, and Thailand's dry season ends. Mediterranean hotels begin to reopen.
  • May: Good. Calm seas in the Seychelles, a dry start in Mauritius and Mozambique, and open hotels in the Mediterranean. Hawaii is quiet. Rain in Zanzibar, the Maldives turning wet and the monsoon arriving in Thailand.
  • June: Very good. The Mediterranean, Zanzibar, Mozambique, the Seychelles and Mauritius all work, and Rio is mild. The Maldives enters its wet season, though manta season in Baa Atoll begins. The Caribbean hurricane season opens.
  • July: Excellent. The peak month for bush and beach: Zanzibar, Mozambique, the Seychelles and Mauritius alongside the dry season on safari. High summer in the Mediterranean and Hawaii. The monsoon continues in Thailand.
  • August: Very good. Much like July for the Indian Ocean islands after a safari. The Mediterranean is at its busiest, and hurricane risk in the Caribbean and Mexico rises.
  • September: Excellent. Our favorite month for the Mediterranean, with a warm sea and thinner crowds. Zanzibar, Mozambique, the Seychelles and Mauritius are all good. Peak hurricane month in the Caribbean, where some hotels close.
  • October: Very good. Calm seas in the Seychelles, warm days in Mauritius and Mozambique, and a dry Zanzibar. Early October still works in the Mediterranean. Hurricane risk continues in the Caribbean.
  • November: Good. The Seychelles, Mauritius and Mozambique are good, and Thailand's dry season begins. Short rains in Zanzibar. Most Mediterranean hotels are closed, and the Caribbean season starts late in the month.
  • December: Excellent. The Maldives, the Caribbean, Mexico, Hawaii and Thailand are all in season, and Zanzibar and Mauritius are good. The holiday weeks fill early everywhere, so book well ahead.

Beach & Islands at a Glance

Brazil on this list starts in Rio de Janeiro, where the city runs right down to Copacabana and Ipanema. It is a beach stay with a great city attached, and it pairs naturally with jaguars in the Pantanal or with Iguaçu Falls.

April to October is milder and drier.

Discover

Southeast Asia on this list means Thailand's Andaman coast: the quieter west-facing bays of Phuket and the limestone islands of Phang Nga Bay. The sea is warm all year, and the food is a reason to go on its own.

Go from November to April, outside the southwest monsoon.

Discover

The Mediterranean is our summer beach choice: the Amalfi Coast, Portofino, the Riviera, the Greek islands and the Balearics. Here the towns, the food and the boats matter as much as the beach.

The sea is warm from June to October, and most hotels close over the winter.

Discover

Mexico and the Caribbean are the short-haul beach trips from the US. Los Cabos and Punta Mita face the Pacific, the Riviera Maya the Caribbean, and St Barths, Antigua and Virgin Gorda are the classic island stays.

December to April is the season, well outside hurricane months.

Discover

Hawaii is the easiest long-distance island trip from the US mainland, with real variety between the islands. The Big Island has lava coast and manta rays, Maui has whales and Haleakalā, and Lanai is small and quiet.

We usually suggest one or two islands rather than four.

Discover

The Indian Ocean is where most of our safaris end. Zanzibar and Mozambique's Bazaruto Archipelago are a short flight from the bush, and the Seychelles, Mauritius and the Maldives are a longer hop.

We match the island to your safari month and to how many nights you have.
