The lodge sits on the western shore of Benguerra, the second-largest island in the Bazaruto Archipelago, which has been a national park since 1971. Accommodation is in casitas and larger cabanas built from local timber and thatch, each with a private plunge pool and a view over the water to the mainland. The style is relaxed and the staff are mostly from the islands and the coast nearby.
The archipelago is one of the richest stretches of coast in East Africa. You can snorkel and dive Two Mile Reef, go out by dhow, fish, kayak, or take a drive inland to the island's freshwater lakes and high dunes. Humpback whales pass from about July to October, and the archipelago holds the largest remaining dugong population on the East African coast.
Benguerra suits couples and families who want a straightforward beach stay with good diving. The lodge is reached by a short helicopter or light-aircraft hop from Vilanculos, which has flights from Johannesburg. Tides shape the snorkeling and boat trips, and January to March brings heat, rain and cyclone risk.
andBeyond Benguerra Island is a barefoot beach lodge inside Mozambique's Bazaruto Archipelago National Park, with casitas and cabanas set along the sand. It is a natural and easy finish to a safari in South Africa's Sabi Sand or Greater Kruger.
