Eden Rock – St Barths

St Jean Bay, St Barthélemy, French West Indies

Eden Rock began as a private house built on the rock in St Jean Bay in the 1950s, and it has been a hotel for decades. Today it is part of the Oetker Collection. It was rebuilt after Hurricane Irma in 2017 and reopened in 2019. Rooms, suites and beach cottages are spread over the rock and along the sand, and a handful of larger villas sit nearby.

St Jean is a calm, sheltered bay for swimming and paddleboarding, and the hotel's beach restaurant and bar are at the center of island life. From here it is a short drive to Gustavia's harbor, the island's other beaches, and lunch spots around the coast. Boat days to quieter coves and snorkeling at the marine reserve fill the rest of the week.

Eden Rock suits couples, families and groups of friends who want to be in the middle of things. It is busy and social rather than secluded, especially over Christmas and New Year. The hotel closes for part of each autumn. Getting to St Barths usually means a small plane from St Maarten, with a short and famous runway, or a ferry.

Eden Rock – St Barths stands on a rocky point in the middle of St Jean Bay, with rooms and villas spreading along the beach on either side. It is the island's best-known hotel and the one we suggest for a lively, sociable St Barths stay right on the sand.
