Amanpuri opened in 1988 and was the first hotel of what became the Aman group. It sits on a quiet headland on Phuket's west coast, with pavilions in a traditional Thai style set among coconut palms on the slope above the sea, and larger villas with their own staff. A long black-tiled pool looks down to Pansea Beach.
The resort has its own fleet of boats, which is the best way to see the area. Day trips run to the limestone islands of Phang Nga Bay and to the reefs and islands off Phuket, and in season to the Similan Islands, a national park known for its diving. There is a large spa, a wellness program, tennis and a good Thai restaurant.
Amanpuri suits couples and families who want a quiet, well-run base with good boats. The hillside layout means steps. From about May to October the southwest monsoon brings rain and rough seas to this coast, and the Similan Islands close to visitors for part of the year.
Amanpuri is Aman's first resort, opened in 1988 on a coconut-palm headland above Pansea Beach on Phuket's west coast. Thai-style pavilions and villas are spread through the trees. It suits couples and families who want calm, discreet service and easy boat trips into the Andaman Sea.
