My story

Hi, I'm Mark.

I started Wild Atlas Explorations because the best trips I've taken all came down to the same things: being in the right place in the right season, staying somewhere small, and having a guide who knew what they were doing.

‍
I've traveled to more than 35 countries, and I plan every trip as if I were going myself.

‍How I plan: the right season first, then small hotels or camps and good guides, with fewer stops so you actually get to know each place. And an honest opinion about what's worth your time and what to skip.

Why Plan With Me

  • First-hand experience in many of the places I recommend, and the hotel pages say where I've stayed
  • The right season, without the crowds: the right places to stay, private guiding where it counts, and careful timing
  • Honest advice on what's worth your time and what isn't

Trips that shaped how I plan

My wife and I honeymooned in the Maasai Mara, and watching the sun come up over the plains still sets the bar for a safari morning. In Uganda, trekking to the mountain gorillas in Bwindi was hard going and worth every step. In Peru, we crossed the Andes by train to Machu Picchu and stayed at Palacio Nazarenas in Cusco, still one of my favorite hotels anywhere.

In Australia, we spent days tasting through the Barossa, then dove the Great Barrier Reef in the quiet season with almost no one else on it. That's the trip I think about most when planning for clients: the same reef in a different month is a completely different experience. Timing is most of the job.

If that sounds like the kind of trip you want, I'd love to hear where you're thinking of going.
