Soneva Fushi

Kunfunadhoo Island, Baa Atoll, Maldives

Soneva Fushi opened in 1995 on Kunfunadhoo, one of the larger islands in Baa Atoll, about a 30-minute seaplane flight from Malé. Most villas are on the island itself, set back in the trees with a path to the beach, and many have their own pools. A smaller group of over-water villas was added more recently. The house rule is no shoes, and most people get around by bicycle.

There is more to do here than on most Maldives islands. You can snorkel and dive the house reef, go out by boat to Hanifaru Bay, where reef manta rays gather to feed in the southwest monsoon, watch the stars from the observatory, see a film at the outdoor cinema and visit the island's recycling center. The Den keeps children busy for whole days.

Soneva Fushi suits families and couples who want space, good food and a relaxed island. The style is rustic and the jungle is real, so expect insects and humidity. The manta season at Hanifaru falls in the wetter months, when there is more rain and wind, while December to April is the driest stretch.

Soneva Fushi is a barefoot resort on a forested island in Baa Atoll, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in the Maldives. Large villas sit among the trees just off the beach. It is the Maldives stay we suggest for families and for anyone who wants an island that feels lived in, not polished.
