Cap Rocat

Cala Blava, Bay of Palma, Mallorca, Spain

Cap Rocat was built as a coastal fortress in the late 19th century to defend the Bay of Palma, and it stayed in military hands until it was turned into a hotel. The stone walls and gun positions are still there. Rooms and suites are in the former casemates and soldiers' quarters, some with private terraces or plunge pools, and a few sit out on the cliff edge facing the sea.

The fortress has no sandy beach. Instead, there is a sea club on the rocks with platforms and ladders for swimming, and a saltwater pool. Palma's old town, cathedral and restaurants are about a 20-minute drive, and the rest of Mallorca, from the Tramuntana mountains to quieter coves in the south and east, is easy to reach by car or boat.

Cap Rocat suits couples and anyone who likes history and a quiet setting. It is not a beach hotel, and the walk between rooms and the sea club involves steps. The hotel is seasonal, with summer the busiest time.

Cap Rocat is a hotel inside a former military fortress on the edge of the Bay of Palma in Mallorca. Rooms are set in old casemates and stone barracks, with the sea below. It suits couples who want something unusual, close to Palma but private.
