Hualalai sits on the Kona-Kohala coast of Hawaiʻi Island, about 15 minutes from Kona's airport. Rooms and suites are in low, two-story bungalows spread along the shore, with black lava rock, white sand coves and the ocean in front. The best-known pool, King's Pond, is a large swimming pool cut into the lava and filled with seawater and reef fish.
Days can be as active as you like. There is snorkeling in the coves, a Jack Nicklaus golf course, a large spa, and a cultural center that teaches Hawaiian history and crafts. Off Kona, night snorkels and dives with manta rays are a highlight, humpback whales pass in winter, and Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park is a long but worthwhile day trip or a helicopter flight away.
Hualalai suits families, golfers and couples who want a full resort on a quieter coast. The shoreline is lava rock with sandy coves rather than one long beach, and winter swells can make the open ocean rough. The Big Island is large, so plan on long drives or a second base for the volcano side.
Four Seasons Resort Hualalai is a low-rise resort on the lava coast north of Kona, on the Big Island of Hawaii. Its bungalows face the ocean, its pools include a swimmable aquarium carved from lava, and it is our first choice on the Big Island for families.
