Zermatt village at night beneath the Matterhorn, Switzerland

Zermatt and the Matterhorn

A car-free village under the peak

Zermatt and the Matterhorn

Zermatt is a car-free village at the head of the Mattertal, under the Matterhorn, with skiing on the glacier all year and high-level walks in summer.

I plan it as a mountain base on a Switzerland trip, ideally arriving on the Glacier Express from St. Moritz.

Researched profile: this page is written from my planning research and partner knowledge rather than a stay of my own here, and when that changes, this line comes off.

What and Where It Is

Zermatt sits at the head of the Mattertal in southern Switzerland, under the Matterhorn, the 4,478-meter peak on the Swiss-Italian border. The village is car-free. Its skiing links over the border to Cervinia in Italy, and its glacier ski area stays open in summer.

What You Do Here

Zermatt has two seasons, and both are good. In winter, ski. In summer, the lifts let you start high and stay high on the walks, with the glacier still open for skiing above them. Ibex, chamois and marmots are common on summer walks above the tree line.

The arrival matters too. Zermatt is the western end of the Glacier Express, the scenic train from St. Moritz: about eight hours over 291 bridges and through 91 tunnels. For general Alpine skiing and walking across the region, see my Alps guide.

Best Time to Go

December to March is ski season, and mid-June to mid-September is best for walking, when the high paths are open. The glacier keeps some skiing going all year, but many mountain hotels close between seasons, so check dates for spring and late autumn. See my guide to Europe in the shoulder season for which hotels are open when.

Getting There and How Long to Stay

Fly into Zurich or Geneva. Trains reach Zermatt in about three to four hours from Zurich, or come in on the Glacier Express from St. Moritz. On a first visit I plan Zermatt as one of two mountain bases, with a lake base before or after it.

Where to Stay

I can advise on the right hotel in Zermatt for your dates and group. Mont Cervin Palace and Grand Hotel Zermatterhof are the two grand hotels on the main street, and The Omnia is a smaller, modern house on a rock above the village.

Pairing

St. Moritz and the Engadin at the other end of the Glacier Express, and Lake Geneva or Zurich and Lucerne for the lake half of the trip. The Switzerland guide covers the whole country.
