The hotel was built between 1876 and 1879, and when it opened it was the largest hotel in the village. It is owned by the Burgergemeinde, the community of long-established Zermatt families. Rooms and suites are traditional in style, and there is a spa and several restaurants, including Brasserie Lusi, with a view of the Matterhorn.
The Gornergrat railway and the Sunnegga funicular are a short walk away, and the Matterhorn Express gondola is a little further up the valley. In winter you can ski all day across Zermatt and Cervinia, and in summer the lifts open up high-level walks and the glacier ski area. Two or three nights here pair well with St. Moritz or Andermatt on the Glacier Express.
The Zermatterhof suits couples and families who like a traditional hotel with history. The style is classic rather than modern. Bahnhofstrasse can be busy in the evenings, so ask for a quieter room if that matters. The hotel closes between seasons, usually in spring and autumn, so check dates first.
Grand Hotel Zermatterhof has stood on Zermatt's main street since 1879 and is owned by the local community of old Zermatt families. It is a classic, well-run grand hotel in the middle of the car-free village.
