The Lavaux vineyard terraces above Lake Geneva in the canton of Vaud, Switzerland

Lake Geneva

Geneva, Lausanne, Montreux and the Lavaux vineyards

Lake Geneva

Lake Geneva is Geneva, Lausanne and Montreux along the north shore, with the terraced Lavaux vineyards, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, between them.

I plan it as the lake base on a first Switzerland trip, with Geneva as the place to fly in.

Researched profile: this page is written from my planning research and partner knowledge rather than a stay of my own here, and when that changes, this line comes off.

What and Where It Is

Lake Geneva sits in western Switzerland. Geneva is at its southwestern tip, and Lausanne and Montreux are along the north shore. Between them, the Lavaux vineyards climb the slope above the water in terraces, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

What You Do Here

The Lavaux terraces are the signature landscape here. Spend time in the vineyards, then in the towns along the shore. On a first visit this is the lake half of the trip, the easy days before or after the mountains.

Best Time to Go

Mid-June to mid-September is the best window for a first Switzerland trip, when the mountain half of the trip is open too. Spring and late autumn are quiet. See my guide to Europe in the shoulder season for which hotels are open when.

Getting There and How Long to Stay

Fly into Geneva. Trains reach almost everywhere from there. I suggest eight to ten nights for a first Switzerland trip: a lake, then two mountain bases, with a scenic train between them. Lake Geneva is the lake.

Where to Stay

I can advise on the right hotel on Lake Geneva for your dates and group.

Pairing

Zermatt or the Bernese Oberland for the mountains. The Switzerland guide covers the whole country.
