Badrutt's Palace Hotel among snow-covered trees in winter, St. Moritz

St. Moritz and the Engadin

A high, sunny valley of lakes, larches and wildlife

St. Moritz and the Engadin

St. Moritz and the Engadin are a high, sunny valley in Graubünden, with lakes, larch forests and the Swiss National Park a short drive away.

I plan it as one of the two mountain bases on a Switzerland trip: skiing in winter, walking and early-morning wildlife in summer, with Badrutt's Palace as the base.

Researched profile: this page is written from my planning research and partner knowledge rather than a stay of my own here, and when that changes, this line comes off.

What and Where It Is

The Engadin is a high valley in Graubünden, in the southeast of Switzerland, with a chain of lakes along its floor and larch forests on the slopes. St. Moritz is its best-known town, host of the Winter Olympics in 1928 and 1948. The Swiss National Park, founded in 1914, is a short drive away at Zernez.

What You Do Here

In winter, ski. Corviglia is right above town, and Corvatsch and Diavolezza are a short drive away.

In summer, walk, and give one early morning to the national park. You are required to stay on the marked paths there, and the first hours of the day are the best time to find ibex, chamois and red deer. The lakes around St. Moritz are good for sailing and paddleboarding. My guide to the Alps in summer covers the Engadin in more detail.

St. Moritz is also the eastern end of the Glacier Express, the scenic train to Zermatt: about eight hours, over 291 bridges and through 91 tunnels. For general Alpine skiing and summer walking across the region, see my Alps guide.

Best Time to Go

There are two seasons here and a gap. Winter runs from December to March, and mid-June to mid-September is best for walking and wildlife. In between, many mountain hotels close, Badrutt's Palace included, so check dates before you plan around spring or late autumn. See my guide to Europe in the shoulder season for which hotels are open when.

Getting There and How Long to Stay

Fly into Zurich. Trains reach St. Moritz in about three to four hours, and the ride is part of the trip. On a first visit I plan the Engadin as one of two mountain bases, with a lake base before or after it.

Where to Stay

Badrutt's Palace has been the grand hotel of St. Moritz since 1896 and is still owned by the Badrutt family. It sits above Lake St. Moritz and suits families and anyone who wants a lively, sociable hotel. It opens for two seasons only, roughly early December to late March and early June to early September, and closes in between, so the hotel's calendar sets the dates of the trip. It is very expensive in peak winter weeks.

Pairing

Zermatt and the Matterhorn at the other end of the Glacier Express, Zurich and Lucerne for first or last nights, and Lake Como over the Maloja Pass; see Italy's lakes and coasts for where I would stay there. The Switzerland guide covers the whole country.
