The Lauterbrunnen valley beneath the Jungfrau massif in the Bernese Oberland, Switzerland

The Bernese Oberland

Cog railways, waterfalls and cliffs

The Bernese Oberland

The Bernese Oberland is Interlaken, Wengen, Mürren and the Jungfrau region: the classic Alpine scenery of cog railways, waterfalls and cliffs.

Of Switzerland's three mountain bases, it is the easiest to reach, with skiing in winter and walking in summer.

Researched profile: this page is written from my planning research and partner knowledge rather than a stay of my own here, and when that changes, this line comes off.

What and Where It Is

The Bernese Oberland is the mountain country of central Switzerland around Interlaken, Wengen, Mürren and the Jungfrau region. This is the classic Alpine scenery: waterfalls, cliffs and the cog railways that climb between the villages.

What You Do Here

Ride the railways and walk. In summer the trail networks are very well marked, and the lifts and trains let you start high and stay high. In winter, ski the Jungfrau region. Of the three mountain bases I plan in Switzerland, this is the most accessible. For general Alpine skiing and walking across the region, see my Alps guide.

Best Time to Go

Mid-June to mid-September is best for walking, when the high paths are open. December to March is ski season. Spring and late autumn are quiet, and many mountain hotels close between seasons, so check dates first. See my guide to Europe in the shoulder season for which hotels are open when.

Getting There and How Long to Stay

Fly into Zurich or Geneva and take the train. On a first visit I plan the Oberland as one of two mountain bases, with a lake base before or after it.

Where to Stay

I can advise on the right hotel in the Bernese Oberland for your dates and group.

Pairing

Zurich and Lucerne or Lake Geneva for the lake half of the trip, and Zermatt or St. Moritz as the second mountain base. The Switzerland guide covers the whole country.
