Marbella and the Costa del Sol

Marbella Club on the Golden Mile, the old town, and the coast after the cities

Marbella and the Costa del Sol

Marbella is where a Spain trip slows down. After Seville, Córdoba and Granada, a few days on the Costa del Sol mean swimming, long lunches and nothing on the schedule, with the white villages and Ronda close by when you want them.

The coast needs some honesty: much of it is built up, and Puerto Banús is a marina of yachts and shops, not the point of the trip. Marbella's old town and the right hotel on the Golden Mile are.

Researched profile: this page is written from my planning research and partner knowledge rather than a stay of my own here, and when that changes, this line comes off.

What and Where It Is

The Costa del Sol is the Mediterranean coast of Andalucía west of Málaga, and Marbella is its best-known town, with the Sierra Blanca mountains behind it. The Golden Mile runs west from Marbella toward Puerto Banús, a stretch of large hotels and villas between the main road and the beach. Málaga airport is the gateway, with the drive to Marbella usually under an hour.

What You Do Here

The main thing is not much: the beach, the pool, long lunches and an early evening walk. Marbella's old town is the counterweight to the resort strip, a small knot of white streets around the Plaza de los Naranjos, with orange trees and cafés, best in the evening. Puerto Banús is worth one look at the marina, in proportion.

The day trips are the second reason to come. Ronda, about an hour inland, sits on both sides of a deep gorge crossed by its eighteenth-century bridge, and the white villages of the Serranía de Ronda are on the way. Málaga, with its Picasso Museum and old center, is an easy half-day. Golf is everywhere, and families find the coast easy.

Best Time to Go

The coast is pleasant most of the year. May, June and September are the best months for swimming without the summer crowds. July and August are hot, busy and expensive, but the sea breeze makes the coast more comfortable than the cities inland. The winters are mild, which makes Marbella a good off-season stay, though not a beach one.

Getting There and How Long to Stay

Fly into Málaga, or take the AVE from Madrid to Málaga in under three hours and drive on. From Granada it is about two hours by road, which is why Marbella works so well as the last stop after Andalucía's cities. Three or four nights is the right length for the decompression leg; families often stay a week.

Where to Stay

Marbella Club is my Costa del Sol choice: the hotel Prince Alfonso von Hohenlohe opened in 1954 on the Golden Mile, with rooms, suites and villas spread through subtropical gardens that run down to the beach. It has a beach club, a Thalasso spa and a kids club, and it suits families and multi-generational groups who want space. It is open year-round. The Golden Mile is built up, so it does not feel remote, and summer is busy and expensive.

Pairs with: Seville, Granada and Córdoba before it, Madrid by AVE from Málaga, and the Spain guide for the whole country.
