The Arlberg

Lech and St. Anton, for serious skiing

The Arlberg

The Arlberg is Lech and St. Anton, two of the best-known ski villages in the Alps.

I plan it as Austria's serious-skiing region, with Almhof Schneider in Lech as the base.

Researched profile: this page is written from my planning research and partner knowledge rather than a stay of my own here, and when that changes, this line comes off.

What and Where It Is

The Arlberg is in western Austria. Lech and St. Anton are its two best-known villages, linked by lift with Zürs, Stuben and Warth-Schröcken. Lech is the small, quiet one, and it limits the number of day tickets it sells, which keeps the slopes calm.

What You Do Here

Ski. From Lech you ski the whole of Ski Arlberg, including the Weisse Ring circuit. Lech's evenings are about long dinners rather than nightlife. For the wider Alps, in winter and summer, see my Alps guide.

Best Time to Go

Ski season runs through the winter, and peak weeks fill early. The same villages work in summer for walking, but check hotel dates first. My guide to Europe in the shoulder season has more on timing.

Month by month

  • January: Excellent.
  • February: Excellent.
  • March: Excellent.
  • April: Good.
  • May: Not recommended.
  • June: Mixed.
  • July: Good.
  • August: Good.
  • September: Mixed.
  • October: Not recommended.
  • November: Not recommended.
  • December: Very good.

Getting There and How Long to Stay

Fly into Salzburg or Munich for the mountains; from Lech, Zurich is about two hours by road and Innsbruck about an hour and a half. A private transfer is easiest. I suggest a week in one village for a ski trip.

Where to Stay

Hotel Almhof Schneider in Lech is a long-standing, family-run ski hotel next to the Schlegelkopf lift, so you ski to and from the door. It suits families and skiers who want a traditional hotel with real character. Peak weeks fill early with regular guests, so book well ahead.

Just across the border in Bavaria, Germany, Schloss Elmau near Garmisch-Partenkirchen is not in Austria, but it fits easily into a trip that includes Salzburg or Innsbruck.

Pairing

Salzburg and Vienna for a city half, or St. Moritz and the Engadin in Switzerland. The Austria guide covers the whole country.
