Vienna

Concerts, museums and long lunches

Vienna

Vienna is the Habsburg capital: the Ringstrasse, the great museums, the State Opera, Schönbrunn Palace and the coffee houses.

I plan it around concerts and museums, with time left for long lunches. Three or four nights here is the anchor of an Austria trip.

Researched profile: this page is written from my planning research and partner knowledge rather than a stay of my own here, and when that changes, this line comes off.

What and Where It Is

Vienna is Austria's capital, in the east of the country on the Danube. The Ringstrasse circles the old center, with the State Opera on it, and Schönbrunn Palace, the Habsburg summer palace, sits with its gardens on the edge of the city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

What You Do Here

Plan the days around concerts and museums, and leave time for long lunches. The coffee houses are a cultural pillar, not a coffee break: long mornings over coffee and cake are part of the city's culture. Give Schönbrunn and its gardens a morning of its own, and book the State Opera before you go.

Best Time to Go

Vienna works year round. December brings the Christmas markets, which make it a winter trip in its own right. My guide to Europe in the shoulder season has more on timing.

Getting There and How Long to Stay

Fly into Vienna. Three or four nights is the anchor stay, then the Wachau for a night or two and the train to Salzburg, which takes about two and a half hours.

Where to Stay

I do not yet have Austrian hotels on my list, but I know the main options well and can advise. Hotel Sacher, beside the State Opera, and Hotel Imperial on the Ringstrasse are the two classic choices.

Pairing

The Wachau and Salzburg to the west, and Prague or Budapest by train. Vienna also works as a few city days before the Croatian coast. The Austria guide covers the whole country.
