Split and Hvar

Diocletian's Palace, then the islands by catamaran and boat

Split and Hvar

Split is built inside and around a Roman emperor's palace, and it is the port for the central Dalmatian islands: Hvar, Brač and Vis.

I give Split one or two nights and the islands most of the time, with three or four nights on Hvar and a private boat day to see the rest.

Researched profile: this page is written from my planning research and partner knowledge rather than a stay of my own here, and when that changes, this line comes off.

What and Where It Is

Split is the main city of central Dalmatia. Its old town is built inside and around Diocletian's Palace, the Roman emperor's palace on the waterfront. Fast catamarans link Split to the islands of Hvar, Brač and Vis. Hvar has a Venetian harbor town, lavender fields and the ancient Stari Grad Plain.

What You Do Here

In Split, the palace is the reason to stop: walk it, and the old town that grew up inside it, in a day. On Hvar, the harbor town, the lavender and the Stari Grad Plain fill a slower few days. The best day of the leg is a private boat from Split around the islands, swimming from quiet coves, which is the best way I know to see this part of the coast.

How to Split the Nights

One or two nights in Split, three or four on Hvar. Split works as the arrival and the palace; the islands are where the time should go.

Best Time to Go

May, June and September are the sweet spot: warm water, long days and fewer people than in July and August, when Hvar is very busy. Many coastal hotels are seasonal and close over the winter, so the islands are a late-spring-to-early-autumn plan.

Getting There and How Long to Stay

Fly into Split, or arrive along the coast from Dubrovnik. Fast catamarans run between Split and the islands, and private boats and a driver fill the gaps. Four to six nights covers Split and Hvar properly.

Where to Stay

On Hvar, Maslina Resort, near Stari Grad, is my island choice: a Relais & Châteaux member that opened in 2020. In Split I choose to suit each trip.

Pairs with: Dubrovnik to the south, Plitvice Lakes or Krka National Park inland, the wider Mediterranean, and the Croatia guide for the whole country.
