Dubrovnik's city walls and old town, Croatia

Dubrovnik

The walled old town early, the islands by boat

Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik is the walled old town on Croatia's southern coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the Elaphiti Islands and Mljet National Park within reach by boat.

I plan it in two halves: the old town early in the morning, before the day crowds, and the islands by boat. Three nights here is my standard opening or closing leg for a Croatia trip.

Researched profile: this page is written from my planning research and partner knowledge rather than a stay of my own here, and when that changes, this line comes off.

What and Where It Is

Dubrovnik sits at the southern end of Croatia's Dalmatian coast. The old town is enclosed by its walls, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Offshore are the Elaphiti Islands, and further out Mljet National Park.

What You Do Here

The walk around the walls is the headline, and I always plan it early. By mid-morning the old town fills with day visitors. Go at opening, then spend the rest of the morning in the lanes inside.

The other half of the stay is on the water. A private boat to the Elaphiti Islands or Mljet, with swims from quiet coves along the way, is the best day most people have here. That balance of one old-town morning and one or two boat days is what makes three nights feel right.

The Base: Bellevue or Excelsior

Both of my Dubrovnik hotels sit outside the walls, and the choice is about what you want in front of you. Hotel Bellevue is built into a cliff above Miramare Bay, west of the old town, with its own pebble beach below; it suits people who want to swim from the hotel and sleep away from the crowds, with the old town a short taxi ride away. Hotel Excelsior has views back to the old town walls, for people who want the city as the view.

Best Time to Go

May, June and September are the sweet spot: warm water, long days and fewer people than in July and August, when Dubrovnik is very busy. Many coastal hotels are seasonal and close over the winter. See my guide to Europe in the shoulder season for the edges of the season.

Getting There and How Long to Stay

Fly into Dubrovnik. Three nights is the standard, at the start or the end of a coast trip, with Split and Hvar the usual next leg by boat or with a driver.

Where to Stay

Hotel Bellevue Dubrovnik is on the cliff above Miramare Bay with its own pebble beach and a spa with an indoor pool. The beach is small and gets busy in July and August, and the walk into town is hilly, so most guests take a taxi. Hotel Excelsior, also in Dubrovnik, has views back to the old town walls.

Pairs with: Split and Hvar up the coast, a few days in Vienna before the coast, the wider Mediterranean for other summer coasts, and the Croatia guide for the whole country.

Culture & Sights

  • Dubrovnik's walls: The walk around the old town walls, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, best done at opening.
  • The old town lanes: Worth the rest of the morning once the walls are done.
  • The Elaphiti Islands: A boat day with swims from quiet coves.
  • Mljet National Park: The further island trip, by boat from Dubrovnik.
