Waterfalls cascading through autumn forest at Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia

Plitvice Lakes

Terraced lakes and waterfalls, done early in the morning

Plitvice Lakes

Plitvice Lakes is a national park of terraced lakes and waterfalls, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.

I plan it early in the morning and treat it as an inland leg of a coast trip, not a detour. For an easier waterfall stop between Split and Zadar, Krka National Park is the alternative.

Researched profile: this page is written from my planning research and partner knowledge rather than a stay of my own here, and when that changes, this line comes off.

What and Where It Is

Plitvice is inland, away from the coast, in the part of Croatia where the forests and the Velebit mountains are home to bears and wolves. The park is a chain of terraced lakes linked by waterfalls, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.

What You Do Here

Walk the lakes, and start early in the morning; that is the single rule that makes Plitvice work.

Plitvice or Krka

Krka National Park near Šibenik is the easier waterfall stop, sitting between Split and Zadar on the coast road. If the trip is all coast, Krka fits without a detour; if you are coming from Zagreb or the north, Plitvice is the one to plan for.

Best Time to Go

May, June and September are Croatia's sweet spot, with fewer people than in July and August. Whatever the month, go early in the day.

Getting There and How Long to Stay

Fly into Zagreb for Plitvice and the north, and drive. I build Plitvice into the route between Zagreb and the coast as an inland leg, with a night nearby so the morning walk can start early.

Where to Stay

Near Plitvice I choose to suit each trip.

Pairs with: Split and Hvar on the coast, Istria and Kvarner in the north, and the Croatia guide for the whole country.
