Istria

Rovinj, the hill towns, and olive oil, wine and truffles

Istria

Istria is the slower, inland-facing side of Croatia: Rovinj on the coast and the hill towns of the interior, known for olive oil, wine and truffles.

I plan it around food, and autumn is the eating season. It is half of my favorite quiet Croatia week, paired with Kvarner and Cres.

Researched profile: this page is written from my planning research and partner knowledge rather than a stay of my own here, and when that changes, this line comes off.

What and Where It Is

Istria is the peninsula in Croatia's north, at the top of the Adriatic. Rovinj is on its coast; behind it, the interior is hill towns, olive groves and vineyards. It is the counterweight to the island coast further south.

What You Do Here

Eat. Olive oil, wine and truffles are the reason to come, and the hill towns of the interior are where to find them. Rovinj gives the coast its share of the stay. The days are about long lunches and short drives between towns rather than sights to tick off.

Best Time to Go

Autumn is the eating season, and the time I would pick. May, June and September are the coast's sweet spot, with fewer people than in July and August.

Getting There and How Long to Stay

Fly into Zagreb for the north and drive. A week split between Istria and Kvarner is the pattern I use, three or four nights in each.

Where to Stay

In Istria I choose to suit each trip, in Rovinj or among the hill towns, depending on whether the coast or the food leads.

Pairs with: Kvarner and Cres for the other half of the week, Slovenia and Venice to the north, and the Croatia guide for the whole country.
