The Grossglockner High Alpine Road winding through the Hohe Tauern in Carinthia, Austria

Hohe Tauern

The Grossglockner, Krimml and golden eagles

Hohe Tauern

Hohe Tauern is the largest national park in Central Europe, around the Grossglockner, Austria's highest mountain.

I plan it as the summer mountain base: the High Alpine Road, the Krimml Waterfalls and the Rauris valley for eagles and vultures, with a car or driver.

Researched profile: this page is written from my planning research and partner knowledge rather than a stay of my own here, and when that changes, this line comes off.

What and Where It Is

Hohe Tauern National Park covers about 1,856 km² across Salzburg, Carinthia and East Tyrol, the largest national park in Central Europe. At its center is the Grossglockner, Austria's highest mountain at 3,798 m.

What You Do Here

Drive the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, which runs 48 km and climbs to about 2,500 m. Walk to the Krimml Waterfalls, which drop 380 m and are the highest in Austria. Spend time in the Rauris valley, a good place to look for golden eagles and, in summer, griffon and bearded vultures. My guide to the Alps in summer covers Hohe Tauern in more detail, and my Alps guide covers the wider mountains.

Best Time to Go

June to September is best for walking and wildlife. The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is open from May to November and closed in winter because of snow. My guide to Europe in the shoulder season has more on timing.

Getting There and How Long to Stay

Fly into Salzburg or Munich. A car or driver is easiest here. Two or three nights is the mountain leg of an eight-to-ten-night Austria trip.

Where to Stay

I do not yet have Austrian hotels on my list, but I know the main options well and can advise on the right place in Hohe Tauern for your dates and group.

Pairing

Salzburg to the north, and Vienna and the Wachau for the rest of the trip. The Austria guide covers the whole country.
