The Wachau

Vineyards, apricot orchards and Melk Abbey on the Danube

The Wachau

The Wachau is a stretch of the Danube west of Vienna, lined with vineyards, apricot orchards and abbeys, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

I plan a night or two here between Vienna and Salzburg, cycling or driving between wineries with a boat on the river.

Researched profile: this page is written from my planning research and partner knowledge rather than a stay of my own here, and when that changes, this line comes off.

What and Where It Is

The Wachau is the stretch of the Danube valley west of Vienna, lined with vineyards, apricot orchards and abbeys, Melk Abbey among them. The whole valley is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

What You Do Here

Move slowly. Cycle or drive between wineries, visit Melk Abbey, and take a boat on the Danube for the third way of seeing the valley. It sits naturally between Vienna and Salzburg, so it breaks the journey rather than adding to it.

Best Time to Go

The valley is at its best in the warmer months, when cycling, the river and the wineries are all in play. My guide to Europe in the shoulder season has more on timing.

Getting There and How Long to Stay

The Wachau is west of Vienna, on the way to Salzburg. A night or two is the standard stay.

Where to Stay

I do not yet have Austrian hotels on my list, but I know the main options well and can advise on the right place in the Wachau for your dates and group.

Pairing

Vienna before it and Salzburg after it. The Austria guide covers the whole country.
