Coastal cliffs and sea caves on the Zakynthos coastline in Greece, above blue Ionian water

Zakynthos

Loggerhead turtles, sea caves and the west-coast cliffs of the Ionian

Zakynthos

Zakynthos is the Ionian outlier on the Greece list, on the west side of the country. Its south coast is the largest loggerhead turtle nesting ground in the Mediterranean, protected as a national marine park, and its west coast is high limestone cliffs over very blue water.

It is a boat-days island, and it is honest to say it is a separate trip from the Aegean: it pairs with Athens and the islands by flight, not ferry.

Researched profile: this page is written from my planning research and partner knowledge rather than a stay of my own here, and when that changes, this line comes off.

What and Where It Is

Zakynthos is the southernmost of the main Ionian Islands, off the west coast of the Peloponnese. The Bay of Laganas on the south coast is the heart of the National Marine Park of Zakynthos, set up to protect the loggerhead turtles that nest on its beaches. The west coast is cliffs and sea caves; the north has the Blue Caves at Cape Skinari; the Vasilikos peninsula in the south-east is greener and quieter.

What You Do Here

The turtles come first. In the nesting season the protected beaches have rules: no access at night, set zones by day, and boats limited in the bay. I use licensed operators that keep to them, and the reward is turtles in the water rather than a crowd on a beach. The rest is boat days: the Blue Caves in the north, the west-coast cliffs and coves, and Navagio, the Shipwreck Beach, which is best seen from the water or the clifftop. Access to that beach has been restricted at times for safety, so I check before promising it.

Be aware that the area around Laganas is a busy resort strip in summer. I base people on the Vasilikos peninsula or in the quieter north.

How It Fits a Greece Trip

Zakynthos is on the opposite side of the country from the Cyclades and the Sporades, with no practical ferry between them. It pairs with Athens by a flight of about an hour, or with the western Peloponnese by ferry from Kyllini. I plan it as its own island stretch, not as one more stop on an Aegean route.

Best Time to Go

June and September are the best months, with warm water and the turtles in season. May is quieter with a cooler sea. July and August are hot and busy. Most hotels are seasonal and close over the winter.

Getting There and How Long to Stay

Fly from Athens, or via a European hub in season, or take the ferry from Kyllini on the Peloponnese. Four or five nights is the right length.

Where to Stay

On Zakynthos I choose hotels and villas to suit each trip. Tell me what you have in mind and I will suggest the right fit.
