Wet tidal flats at Rømø in the Danish Wadden Sea, reflecting the sky

The Wadden Sea

Tidal flats, seals and the Black Sun

The Wadden Sea

The Wadden Sea is a national park and UNESCO World Heritage Site in southwest Jutland: tidal flats, seals, and at dusk in autumn, the Black Sun.

Late September and early October are the reason to build a Denmark trip around this leg.

Researched profile: this page is written from my planning research and partner knowledge rather than a stay of my own here, and when that changes, this line comes off.

What and Where It Is

The Wadden Sea is a national park and UNESCO World Heritage Site in southwest Jutland. Ribe, Denmark's oldest town, with its cathedral and half-timbered houses, is close by and is the natural base town.

What You Do Here

Join a guided walk on the tidal flats and look for seals hauling out. At dusk in late September and early October, watch the starling murmurations the Danes call the Black Sun, which can involve up to a million birds. Walk Ribe's old town.

Best Time to Go

May to September is best for the flats, and late September to early October for the Black Sun. My guide to Europe in the shoulder season has more on timing.

Getting There and How Long to Stay

A car or driver is easier than the train for this corner of Jutland.

Where to Stay

I don't have a named stay here, but I can advise on the right option in or near Ribe.
