Nyhavn canal in Copenhagen, Denmark, lined with colorful townhouses and moored boats

Copenhagen

Canals, design, Tivoli and the table

Copenhagen

Copenhagen is the anchor of every Denmark trip: canals, design, Tivoli Gardens and a restaurant scene that is reason enough to visit.

I plan three or four nights here, with Kronborg Castle as the day trip.

Researched profile: this page is written from my planning research and partner knowledge rather than a stay of my own here, and when that changes, this line comes off.

What and Where It Is

Copenhagen is Denmark's capital, on the Øresund. Tivoli Gardens, the amusement park and gardens in the center, has been open since 1843.

What You Do Here

Eat, cycle and walk the harbor, and swim at the harbor baths in summer. Spend an evening in Tivoli. For a day trip, go north to Kronborg Castle at Helsingør, the Renaissance castle that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the setting of Hamlet.

Best Time to Go

May to September is best, with long light evenings in June and July. Winter is dark and cold, but Copenhagen is cozy in December. My guide to Europe in the shoulder season has more on timing.

Getting There and How Long to Stay

Fly into Copenhagen. Three or four nights of a seven-to-eight-night Denmark trip, with the rest on the coast.

Where to Stay

I don't yet have Danish hotels on my list, but I can advise. Two named bases, properly different: Hotel d'Angleterre on Kongens Nytorv is the classic grand hotel, and Nimb Hotel is the small hotel inside Tivoli Gardens itself.

Pairing

Møn is an easy drive south. Sweden is across the Øresund Bridge. The Denmark guide covers the whole country.
