An aerial view of Skiathos Island's forested coastline and coves in the Northern Sporades, Greece

The Northern Sporades

Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos: the green, pine-and-swimming Greece

The Northern Sporades

The Northern Sporades are the green Greek islands: pine forest running down to the beaches, quiet harbors and clear water, off the mainland north of Athens. Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos are close together, and the marine park around Alonissos protects the Mediterranean monk seal.

I suggest them to people who want swimming, boats and quiet more than white villages and nightlife, as the calmer alternative to the Cyclades.

Researched profile: this page is written from my planning research and partner knowledge rather than a stay of my own here, and when that changes, this line comes off.

What and Where It Is

The Northern Sporades lie in the north-west Aegean, off the Pelion peninsula. Skiathos, the most developed, has the airport and dozens of beaches. Skopelos, next along, is greener and quieter, with a harbor town of white houses climbing the hill. Alonissos, the smallest of the three, sits at the edge of the National Marine Park of Alonissos and the Northern Sporades, one of the largest marine protected areas in the Mediterranean.

What You Do Here

These are islands for the water. Take a boat into the marine park from Alonissos, where dolphins are often seen and Mediterranean monk seals occasionally; it is a protected area, so I use licensed local boats that follow the park rules. On Skiathos, the beaches are the draw, with Koukounaries backed by pine forest. On Skopelos, walk the old town, find the chapel of Agios Ioannis on its rock above the sea, and swim from the pebble coves. Hop between the three by boat rather than seeing everything.

How It Compares to the Cyclades

The Sporades are greener and calmer, with fewer famous sights and far fewer crowds. They lack the drama of Santorini and the design hotels of the Cyclades, and the choice of luxury stays is smaller. They are best as their own island stretch of a week, or a quiet end to a mainland trip.

Best Time to Go

June and September are the best months, with warm water and quieter harbors. July and August are busy, especially on Skiathos. Like the rest of the Greek islands, most hotels are seasonal and close over the winter.

Getting There and How Long to Stay

Fly from Athens to Skiathos, or take the ferry from the mainland ports of Volos or Agios Konstantinos. Between the islands, ferries and fast boats run in season. Five to seven nights across two islands is the right length.

Where to Stay

In the Sporades I choose hotels and villas to suit each trip. Tell me what you have in mind and I will suggest the right fit.
