Golden limestone rock formations over turquoise water at Lagos in the Algarve, Portugal

The Algarve

Cliffs, coves and two different coasts

The Algarve

The Algarve is one name for two coasts: the wild west around Sagres and the slower east toward Tavira, with the resort strip in the middle to steer around.

I add it as the exhale at the end of a trip, three nights after Lisbon and the Douro, when the trip reaches ten days.

Researched profile: this page is written from my planning research and partner knowledge rather than a stay of my own here, and when that changes, this line comes off.

What and Where It Is

The Algarve is Portugal's southern coast, facing the Atlantic: golden limestone cliffs, sea caves and coves. The central resort strip is package-holiday country. The west, Sagres and the wild Costa Vicentina, is surf, cliffs and empty sand. The east toward Tavira is lagoon, islands and a slower, more Portuguese rhythm.

What You Do Here

Choose your coast. Go west for cliffs, surf and empty beaches, or east for the lagoon and the islands. Either way, the point is the right small property and a few slow days.

Best Time to Go

May, June and September, rather than the August crush. Winter is drier and gentler here than in the north. My guide to Europe in the shoulder season has more on timing.

Getting There and How Long to Stay

Three nights at the end of the trip, after Lisbon and the Douro. I only add the Algarve when a trip reaches ten days.

Where to Stay

I place stays here property by property through Fora's partner portfolio rather than from a standing list, and I would rather say so than pad this page with names.

Pairing

Lisbon and the Douro before it, or the Alentejo instead if quiet beats coast. The Portugal guide covers the whole country.
