The Alentejo

Cork oaks, whitewashed villages and Évora

The Alentejo

The Alentejo is the big, quiet third of Portugal that most itineraries skip: cork-oak plains, whitewashed villages, olive groves and Évora.

It is my pick for a second trip to Portugal, or a first one when quiet is the whole point.

Researched profile: this page is written from my planning research and partner knowledge rather than a stay of my own here, and when that changes, this line comes off.

What and Where It Is

The Alentejo is Portugal's interior, inland and south of Lisbon. Évora is the anchor, a UNESCO-listed town with a Roman temple in the middle of it, medieval walls and a chapel of bones.

What You Do Here

Eat and drink. This is the food-and-wine interior: big reds, black pork, bread-and-herb cooking, and converted-farmhouse estates where the evening plan is a long dinner and a very dark sky. Spend a day in Évora.

Best Time to Go

Spring is the best of it, with the wildflowers out. In July and August the interior becomes fierce at midday. My guide to Europe in the shoulder season has more on timing.

Getting There and How Long to Stay

The Alentejo is under two hours from Lisbon, and a car is the way to see it.

Where to Stay

I place stays here property by property through Fora's partner portfolio rather than from a standing list. The right farmhouse estate is a booking decision, so I would rather tell you that than pad this page with names.

Pairing

Lisbon, under two hours away, is the natural pairing. The Portugal guide covers the whole country.
