Connemara and Mayo

Ashford Castle at Cong, bog-and-coast touring, and the quiet west

Connemara and Mayo

Connemara and Mayo are the far west: lakes, bog, mountains, and a coast of islands and small harbors, with far fewer people than Kerry.

Ashford Castle at Cong is the natural base, and here the castle stay is part of the trip, not just a bed: days on the estate and Lough Corrib, and the drives out into Connemara from its door.

Researched profile: this page is written from my planning research and partner knowledge rather than a stay of my own here, and when that changes, this line comes off.

What and Where It Is

Connemara is the western part of County Galway, beyond Galway city: the Twelve Bens mountains, lakes and bog, and a broken coast around Clifden. Mayo lies to the north, with Westport, Croagh Patrick and Achill Island. Cong sits between them, on the shore of Lough Corrib, on the Galway–Mayo border.

What You Do Here

This is touring country. A day in Connemara takes in Kylemore Abbey on its lake, walks in Connemara National Park, and the Sky Road out of Clifden. In Mayo, Westport is the town to wander, Croagh Patrick is the holy mountain above Clew Bay, and Achill Island has the cliffs and beaches. At Ashford Castle itself the estate is the activity: golf, fishing and riding, and the lake on the doorstep.

The Castle Stay

Ashford Castle is the anchor of this leg. I plan two or three nights so there is a full day spent on the estate, not just an evening, with the Connemara and Mayo drives done from there by private driver. It is a large estate with a lot going on, which suits families and multigenerational groups.

Best Time to Go

May to September has the longest days and the mildest weather. July and August are busiest, and still quieter here than in Kerry. Rain is part of the west in any month, and winter days are short.

Getting There and How Long to Stay

Shannon is the nearest transatlantic airport, about two hours by road; Dublin is about three. Three nights is right for a castle stay with a day out each way, or two if it is one stop on a longer west-coast route.

Where to Stay

Ashford Castle at Cong is my first choice: a castle hotel on the shore of Lough Corrib with a large estate and plenty to do on site. Elsewhere in Connemara and Mayo I choose to suit each trip.

Pairs with: Clare and the Burren to the south, Dublin at the start or end, and the Ireland guide for the whole country.
