The Ribeira waterfront and the Douro River in Porto, Portugal

Porto

The Ribeira, the Douro and the port lodges

Porto

Porto is Lisbon's older, moodier sibling: the Ribeira old town stacked above the Douro, and the port lodges across the bridge in Vila Nova de Gaia.

I plan one to two nights here, usually at the end of the trip, flying home from Porto so it never backtracks.

Researched profile: this page is written from my planning research and partner knowledge rather than a stay of my own here, and when that changes, this line comes off.

What and Where It Is

Porto is a working river city of granite, tile and port wine in the north of Portugal. The Ribeira old town, UNESCO-listed, climbs the hill above the Douro River. Across the bridge is Vila Nova de Gaia, where the port lodges are and where the tastings actually happen.

What You Do Here

Walk the Ribeira and the old town, see the tiles in São Bento station, and cross the bridge to Gaia for a port tasting in the lodges. A tasting here is the right bookend to a Douro Valley stay.

Best Time to Go

May, June and September are the best months. Winter in the north is mild, green and wet, so pack for rain. My guide to Europe in the shoulder season has more on timing.

Getting There and How Long to Stay

Porto is about three hours from Lisbon by fast train, and also has nonstop flights from the New York area. One to two nights is enough. In the Lisbon, Douro, Porto triangle it comes last, and you fly home from here.

Where to Stay

The Yeatman in Vila Nova de Gaia is the named stay: on the Gaia side facing the old town, with a two-Michelin-star restaurant and one of the great Portuguese wine cellars. The trade-off is explicit: you sleep across the bridge in exchange for the postcard view of the city.

Pairing

The Douro Valley is upriver, and Lisbon is three hours south by train. The Portugal guide covers the whole country.
