Madeira

Levadas, laurel forest and spring in winter

Madeira

Madeira is a Portuguese island in the Atlantic, closer to Africa than to Lisbon, with a near-year-round spring climate.

It is the one part of Portugal I would happily send you to in January. Treat it as a trip of its own, three nights minimum.

Researched profile: this page is written from my planning research and partner knowledge rather than a stay of my own here, and when that changes, this line comes off.

What and Where It Is

Madeira is an Atlantic island, a short flight from Lisbon. Funchal is the base, with gardens, old-town lanes and the Madeira wine lodges. The island's signature is the levadas, old irrigation channels through laurel forest that is UNESCO-listed.

What You Do Here

Walk the levadas: gentle hiking along the channels through the laurel forest. In Funchal, walk the gardens and the old town and taste Madeira wine in the lodges.

Best Time to Go

Madeira barely notices the seasons, which is its whole argument. It is the winter exception to every timing rule on the mainland. My guide to Europe in the shoulder season has more on timing.

Getting There and How Long to Stay

A short flight from Lisbon. Three nights minimum, as an add-on or a winter trip of its own.

Where to Stay

I do not have a named stay on Madeira yet, but I can advise on the right hotel in Funchal for your dates and group.

Pairing

Lisbon, a short flight away. The Portugal guide covers the whole country.
