Park Hyatt Sydney

The Rocks, Sydney

The hotel is a low-rise building at 7 Hickson Road, set on the waterline between the Harbour Bridge and Circular Quay. There are 155 rooms and suites, many with balconies looking across the water toward the Opera House. The rooftop has a pool and hot tub with cabanas, and downstairs The Dining Room and the Living Room both look out over the harbour.

From here you can walk to the Opera House, the Botanic Garden and the ferries at Circular Quay, which take you to Manly, Watsons Bay or Taronga Zoo. The Rocks has some of Sydney's oldest streets and pubs on the doorstep, and the BridgeClimb starts a few minutes away. Sydney is the usual entry point for international flights, so a few nights here works well at the start of a trip before flying on to Uluru, the reef or Lord Howe Island.

Best for couples and families who want a classic Sydney stay with the harbour in view all day. The caveat is that it is a city hotel, not a lodge: meals and activities are not built into the rate, prices are among the highest in Sydney, and the best views are in the higher room categories, so it is worth paying for an Opera House-facing room.

Park Hyatt Sydney has the best position of any hotel in the city, right on the harbour in The Rocks with the Opera House across the water and the Harbour Bridge overhead. I recommend it for first and last nights of an Australia trip, for travelers who want to walk everywhere and wake up to the harbour.
