The resort sits on a granite island about 240 km north of Cairns, surrounded by 24 white-sand beaches. Accommodation runs from garden view rooms through beachfront suites and ocean view plunge pool villas to The Pavilion and The House at the top end, around 40 rooms in total. Everything is low-rise and spread along the shore, so most rooms are a short walk to the sand.
You reach the island on a roughly one-hour scenic charter flight from Cairns, which shows you the reef on the way in. Rates include meals, a selection of drinks, snorkel gear, kayaks, paddle boards and your own motorised dinghy with a picnic to take to an empty beach. Dive and snorkel trips go to the inner and outer reef, including the Cod Hole, known for its giant potato cod, and the Lizard Island Research Station runs talks on the reef's health. It pairs well with a few nights in the Daintree or a city stay.
Best for couples, honeymooners and keen snorkelers or divers who want the reef without day-boat crowds. Children must be 10 or older. The honest caveats: it is expensive, the charter flight adds real cost, and you are on a small island for your stay, so it suits people happy to swim, read and dive. North Queensland summers bring heat, humidity and stinger season.
Lizard Island is the northernmost resort on the Great Barrier Reef, set on a national park island with reef right off the beach. It suits couples and divers who want the reef as the main event, with beaches to themselves and almost everything included.
The reef right off the beach is incredible, though there's some obvious coral bleaching. The island feels deserted and the food is great. We dove the Cod Hole and it didn't disappoint, and you can see sharks close to the beach.
You need a private charter to get to the island, which isn't cheap, but you can see the reef and sea life from the plane on the way in.
