Greater Kruger Private Reserves

Thornybush, Timbavati and Klaserie

Greater Kruger Private Reserves

North of the Sabi Sand, private reserves including Timbavati, Klaserie and Thornybush run along Kruger's western edge, all open to the same unfenced system.

We like them for Big Five safaris with fewer vehicles than the Sabi Sand, easy access from Hoedspruit and strong smaller lodges.

What and Where

The fences between Kruger and Timbavati came down in 1993 so wildlife could move naturally, and Klaserie lies just to Timbavati's north. Together they form a large block of private land on the western side of the Greater Kruger, centered on the town of Hoedspruit. Timbavati is mixed savanna with open plains, thornveld and mopane woodland. Klaserie follows the Klaserie River, with riverine forest, rocky hills and plenty of hippo.

What You Do There

  • Morning and evening game drives in open vehicles, with fewer cars at each sighting than in the busier southern reserves
  • Bush walks and tracking on foot
  • Birding and photographic drives

All of the Big Five are here. Timbavati is known for good leopard sightings, and its white lions drew wide attention in the mid-1970s. They are tawny lions carrying a rare color gene, not a separate species, and sightings are never guaranteed.

Best Time to Go

The dry months from May to October are best for game viewing, with September and October the clearest. Winter mornings are cold. November to April is hot and green, with afternoon storms and the best birding. The whole area is in a malaria zone year-round.

Getting There and How Long to Stay

Fly from Johannesburg or Cape Town to Hoedspruit's Eastgate airport or Kruger Mpumalanga airport, or straight to a lodge airstrip. Three or four nights is right for most people. Victoria Falls is a direct flight from Johannesburg and makes an easy add-on: see our page on Mosi-oa-Tunya and Victoria Falls and our guide to high and low water at the falls.

Where We Like to Stay

Royal Malewane is in the southeast of Thornybush, overlooking a waterhole, with six Luxury Suites and two Royal Suites, a large spa and a six-bedroom villa, Africa House. The lodge closed in January 2026 for its first major renovation since opening in 1999, and trade reports in July 2026 confirmed it had reopened, with redesigned suites and an expanded spa. The main lodge is now often referred to as Malewane Lodge, the flagship of the Royal Malewane collection, so expect to see both names. Check current details with us before booking.

For Timbavati and Klaserie we choose from a range of smaller camps depending on season and budget. Ask us for current recommendations.

White Rhino

The southern white rhino is the larger of Africa's two rhinos, a grazer that lives in small groups on open grassland. Greater Kruger holds a large share of Africa's rhinos and has been hit hard by poaching. A study published in Science in 2025 looked at 11 reserves in the Greater Kruger region from 2017 to 2023. It counted 1,985 rhinos poached over that time, about 6.5% of the population each year, and found that dehorning 2,284 rhinos cut poaching by about 78%, for around 1.2% of total protection spending. Many reserves here now dehorn routinely, so do not be surprised to see rhinos without horns.
