Wilderness Mokete

Mababe concession, eastern edge of the Okavango Delta

Nine canvas tents and a tented lounge are linked by ground-level wooden walkways. Each tent has air conditioning, Wi-Fi and a retractable roof, so you can watch the stars from bed. The camp is fully off-grid and solar-powered. The setting mixes grassland, mopane woodland and the Mababe Marsh, which fills in summer and draws wildlife and birds. Mokete means feast, a fair name for a place built around predators and prey.

This is a game-drive camp, and guests can stay out as long as a sighting deserves. In the dry season buffalo gather here in herds that can top a thousand, and lions hunt them in and around the marsh, with spotted hyena close behind. An underground hide overlooks the marsh, and short walks focus on tracks, birds and insects. Zebra move through from about December to March. In a Botswana trip, pair it with a water camp.

Mokete suits returning safari travelers and photographers who want predator action away from busier areas. The honest caveats: there are no boating or mokoro trips, dust is unavoidable in the dry season, and green-season game is more scattered, though birding is good then. The camp recommends it for children 13 and over, and it is unfenced, so guests are escorted after dark. June to October is the strongest time for game.

Wilderness Mokete is a tented camp on a private concession of over 50,000 hectares in Mababe, on the eastern edge of the Okavango Delta, opened in 2024 with the Mababe community. We recommend it for big buffalo herds and the lions that hunt them, often in daylight, and it suits experienced safari travelers who want a remote land camp.
