The Newt in Somerset

Somerset, England, UK

Koos Bekker and Karen Roos bought Hadspen House in 2013 and opened The Newt in 2019. The house dates back to the late 17th century and took its Georgian form in the 1780s. Rooms are split between Hadspen House and the more contemporary Farmyard, a short buggy ride away. There is a spa, and the walled Parabola garden is one of the highlights of the estate.

The estate has gardens, woodland, cyder orchards with hundreds of apple varieties, and a cyder press. Villa Ventorum is a reconstructed Roman villa with a working bathhouse. Restaurants include the Botanical Rooms and Farmyard Kitchen. Trains run from London Paddington to nearby Castle Cary, so it pairs easily with a few nights in London.

The Newt suits couples, garden lovers and families who want a countryside stay with plenty to do. It is rural, so you will need a car or transfers to explore Bruton and Bath. Weekends book up early, and English weather is unpredictable outside summer.

The Newt is a Georgian country house hotel near Bruton in Somerset, surrounded by gardens, orchards, woodland and farmland. It is the best English country stay we know, with a lot to do on the estate and plenty of places to eat.
