The Louise

Marananga, Barossa Valley, South Australia

The Louise sits on Seppeltsfield Road in Marananga, about an hour's drive north of Adelaide, with Tanunda and Nuriootpa around eight minutes away by car. There are 15 villa-style suites, all facing the vineyards. Each has a king bed, a lounge area, a gated private courtyard and a rear terrace looking over the vines. Breakfast can be served in your suite, and there is a pool with a terrace for slow afternoons between tastings.

Appellation, the lodge's restaurant, is a big part of the reason to come, cooking seasonal food from local produce alongside Barossa wine. Rates have typically included breakfast, pre-dinner drinks and dinner there each night. The lodge runs complimentary Swirl Sessions, hosted tastings with local winemakers from producers such as Torbreck, Hentley Farm, Elderton and Two Hands, plus guided tours of its art collection. For cellar door days, book a private driver.

Best for couples and food and wine travelers who want a small, quiet base in the vines. If you want wildlife too, add a few nights on Kangaroo Island, a short flight away, where we like Southern Ocean Lodge. The caveats: there is a two-night minimum, 15 suites fill quickly around harvest, and beyond the restaurant, the pool and the tastings, most activities happen off site, so you will need a car or driver.

The Louise is a lodge of 15 suites among the vineyards at Marananga, in the northwest corner of the Barossa Valley, and one of our favorite stays in Australia. It suits couples and wine lovers who want good food at its Appellation restaurant and the valley's cellar doors a short drive away.
