The Highlands sits on the edge of the Olmoti Crater forest in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, about an hour from the Ngorongoro Crater. It has eight domed suites of canvas and perspex, including a family suite and a honeymoon suite with an outdoor hot tub. Each has a wood-burning stove, which you will be glad of at night. Views run over grassland and Maasai villages toward the Gol Mountains.
The camp is a base for walking as much as driving. You can hike Olmoti Crater, take a longer walk down into Empakaai Crater to its soda lake and flamingos, visit a nearby Maasai community and spend a full day on the Ngorongoro Crater floor. There is a small spa with a barrel sauna. The nearest airstrip is Lake Manyara, about three hours by road, so most guests arrive by car.
The Highlands suits couples, hikers and families with children aged five and over who like to get out on foot. It is high and cool, and the domes are cozy rather than grand. It is farther from the Crater than the rim lodges, so Crater days start with a longer drive. The Empakaai walk is for ages 12 and up.
The Highlands is a small Asilia camp of domed suites on the slopes of Olmoti Crater, and we recommend it for its walking, Maasai country and a quieter alternative to the Crater rim. It suits active travelers who want more from the highlands than one Crater game drive.
