Splendido, A Belmond Hotel, Portofino

Portofino, Italy

The building began as a 16th-century Benedictine monastery and later became the Baratta family's summer home before opening as a hotel. It climbs the slope above the village, so most rooms and the terraces look over the Ligurian Sea. Martin Brudnizki's studio recently redesigned the interiors, and the hotel now has Italy's first permanent Dior Spa, a heated outdoor pool and the Baratta Sedici bar.

A complimentary shuttle runs down to Splendido Mare on Portofino's piazzetta, so you get the quiet of the hill and the life of the harbor. Days here are for boat trips along the coast, walks on the Portofino headland, and long lunches at La Terrazza. Genoa airport is under an hour away, and it pairs well with Lake Como or Tuscany for a northern Italy trip.

Splendido suits couples and anyone who wants the full Riviera experience in a historic setting. Rates are very high, and summer books up well ahead. The hotel is seasonal and closes over the winter, so check dates before you plan around it. The hillside location means you rely on the shuttle or a steep walk to reach the village.

Splendido sits on the hillside above Portofino's harbor in a former Benedictine monastery, with terraces and a pool looking straight down over the bay. It is the classic Riviera hotel, recently redesigned, and the best base on this stretch of Liguria.
