Somalisa Acacia

South-eastern Hwange National Park

There are four suites: two standard tents and two family tents with interconnecting bedrooms, a privacy flap between the children's and adults' rooms, and cots for young children. Each has a wood-burning fireplace, copper bath and indoor and outdoor showers, and the family tents link to the main area by boardwalk. The camp takes up to 12 guests, runs on solar power and recycles most of its water.

Activities include game drives, walking safaris, birding and community visits. Children can join the Ngwana Club, with storytelling, crafts, nature walks and a Junior Guide certificate. Elephants come to the Elephant Pool by the deck, and zebra, giraffe, lion, leopard and cheetah are seen on drives. Three nights works well, and it pairs well with Victoria Falls for an easy family trip.

Acacia suits families and small groups who want to book most or all of a small camp. The camp does not offer babysitting, so parents should plan to be with younger children. It is built around families, so couples looking for a quieter stay may prefer Somalisa Camp, which takes guests aged 12 and up. With so few suites, school holiday dates go early.

Somalisa Acacia is African Bush Camps' small family camp in Hwange, overlooking a waterhole and with its own Elephant Pool. With interconnecting family tents and a kids' program, it is one of the easier places in Zimbabwe to go on safari with children.
