Singita Kwitonda Lodge

Edge of Volcanoes National Park

Kwitonda sits on 178 acres of land on the edge of Volcanoes National Park, with forest climbing up the volcanoes behind it and buffalo sometimes grazing the open grassland. There are eight suites, each with a heated plunge pool, and next door is Kataza House, a private four-bedroom villa for families or groups who want the place to themselves. The lodge is named after a calm silverback.

The park headquarters, where every trek starts with a 7am briefing, is a short drive away. Gorilla and golden monkey treks are the main event, and there are also hikes, birding, cycling, a farm-to-table garden, community visits and a trip to the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund's Ellen DeGeneres Campus. Guests can plant trees as part of Singita's work to restore forest on the land.

It is a strong fit for couples and families who want a quiet, very high-end stay, and Kataza House works well for multigenerational trips. Children under 15 cannot trek but are looked after at the lodge. Expect rates at the very top of the Rwanda market, and with so few suites it books up well ahead, often before gorilla permits become the problem.

Singita Kwitonda is a small, polished lodge right on the edge of Volcanoes National Park, with the volcanoes in view and a short drive to the park headquarters. It suits travelers who want top-end service, privacy and a lodge closely tied to reforestation at the park edge.
