Selinda Explorers Camp

Selinda Reserve, northern Botswana

This is a traditional tented camp in the shade of riverine trees on the banks of the Selinda Spillway. Great Plains lists three guest tents and one two-bedroom family tent, and the open-sided main area is built around a termite mound. It is simpler than Zarafa, and that is part of the appeal. Access is by light aircraft from Maun or Kasane, about 45 to 50 minutes, then roughly 50 minutes by road.

Walking is the focus here, and it is best from late May to October, when the grass is lower and visibility better. In years when the Spillway floods, usually around May to September, guides take guests out by canoe. Day and night drives cover the rest of the reserve, where buffalo arrive from late April and a zebra migration of up to a thousand animals passes through in June and July. It pairs well with a Delta camp that offers more boating.

Selinda Explorers suits fit travelers and families with older children who like being out on foot. The minimum age is ten, and 12 and up is better because walking is central. Canoeing depends entirely on the flood, which varies a lot from year to year, so check before you book if it is the reason you are going. The camp is unfenced, Wi-Fi is slow, and there is no phone signal.

Selinda Explorers Camp is Great Plains Conservation's classic canvas camp on the Selinda Spillway, in the private Selinda Reserve. We recommend it for active travelers who want to walk and, when the Spillway floods, canoe, with good odds of lion, leopard and wild dog.
