Selinda Camp

Selinda Reserve, northern Botswana

The camp sits on the banks of the Selinda Spillway inside the private Selinda Reserve, which covers more than 1,300 square kilometers. It is a small camp of tented rooms plus the Selinda Suite, a two-bedroom unit that sleeps four and works well for a family or two couples. Guests fly in by light aircraft from Maun or Kasane, then drive about 40 minutes to camp, with a boat transfer for the last stretch when the water is high.

Activities are open-vehicle game drives, night drives, guided bush walks and, when water levels allow, boating, with seasonal catch-and-release fishing. Great Plains reports regular sightings of the Selinda wild dog pack and the Selinda lion pride, along with leopard and hippo. At the peak of the dry season, thousands of elephants move through the reserve. It makes a good dry-country contrast to a water camp in the Okavango Delta.

Selinda Camp suits couples, small groups and families with older children who are genuinely keen on wildlife. The minimum age is eight, and walks are for guests aged 12 and over. Game viewing from November to March can be hit or miss, because animals spread out once the rains fill the pans, so June to October is the stronger time to go. The camp is unfenced, and guests are escorted to their rooms after dark.

Selinda Camp is Great Plains Conservation's camp on the Selinda Spillway, in a private reserve that links the Okavango Delta with the Linyanti. We recommend it for its big dry-season elephant herds and the resident wild dogs, and it suits travelers who want a small, quiet camp with night drives and walking.
