One&Only Gorilla's Nest

Kinigi, Volcanoes National Park

Gorilla's Nest sits in Kinigi, in the foothills of the Virunga volcanoes and about five minutes from Volcanoes National Park. Its 21 rooms are freestanding lodges and suites raised on stilts among eucalyptus trees, built with local volcanic stone and Rwandan imigongo patterns. They range from Forest King Lodges to two-bedroom lodges and larger suites, all spread through gardens around a main lodge with fireplaces.

This is a base for gorilla and golden monkey treks, and being in Kinigi keeps the early drive to the park briefing short. Between treks there is a spa, a heated outdoor pool, a gym and sauna, coffee tastings, yoga and cultural visits. The resort has its own helipad, so you can fly in from Kigali airport instead of driving about two and a half hours.

It suits couples and families with teenagers who want comfort and plenty to do on rest days. Gorilla trekkers must be 15 or older. With 21 rooms it feels more like a resort than an intimate lodge, so travelers after a small, quiet camp may prefer Bisate or Kwitonda. The helipad is a real advantage on a short trip, when you would rather not lose half a day to the road.

One&Only Gorilla's Nest is the most resort-like of the Volcanoes lodges, with treehouse-style rooms on stilts among eucalyptus trees about five minutes from the park. It suits travelers who want a full-service base with a spa, heated pool and proper restaurant between gorilla treks.
