Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel

Gardens, Cape Town

The Mount Nelson opened in 1899 and has been painted pink since 1918, which is why it is known as the Pink Lady. It sits in nine acres of gardens in the Gardens neighborhood, just below Table Mountain. There are 196 rooms and suites, two outdoor pools and seven restaurants and bars.

Afternoon tea in the Lounge is a Cape Town institution, and the hotel has restaurants ranging from South African food on the Verandah to Pan Asian in the Red Room and seafood at Amura. From here it is easy to reach Table Mountain, Kirstenbosch, the Cape Peninsula and the Winelands. The airport is about 30 minutes away, which makes it practical at either end of a trip.

The Nelson suits families, first-time visitors and anyone who likes a big, lively hotel with gardens to wander. Children are easy here thanks to the space and pools. It is in the city rather than on the sea, so you give up the ocean views of Bantry Bay or Camps Bay, and with nearly 200 rooms it is far from intimate.

The Mount Nelson is Cape Town's grand old hotel, pink since 1918, set in nine acres of gardens at the foot of Table Mountain. We recommend it for families and anyone who wants a classic hotel with space, pools and lots of places to eat.
