Wilderness Mombo

Chief's Island, Moremi Game Reserve

The camp looks over an open floodplain on Chief's Island, in the central Delta. There are nine raised tented suites, eight for couples plus a family unit that sleeps four, linked by walkways and each with a deck and private plunge pool. Shared spaces include a pool, a gym and a wellness area with a sauna. The airstrip is a short drive away, and in peak flood it can go under water, so the last leg is then by helicopter.

Mombo is a land camp first. Day and night game drives cover floodplain and woodland where red lechwe, impala, giraffe, buffalo and elephant gather, and lion, leopard, spotted hyena and wild dog hunt them. Boating and mokoro trips run when the water level allows. In a Botswana trip it works best as the game-drive camp, paired with a water-based camp elsewhere in the Delta.

Mombo suits travelers who want strong big-game viewing above everything else, and couples or families who are happy to book well ahead. It is one of the most expensive camps in Botswana and is often full months in advance. Children under 12 generally need a private vehicle. The camp is unfenced, with animals walking through, so guests are escorted after dark.

Mombo is Wilderness's flagship camp in the Okavango Delta, set on the north-eastern corner of Chief's Island inside Moremi Game Reserve. We recommend it for game drives on floodplains that draw big herds and the predators that follow them.
