Time + Tide Luwi

South Luangwa National Park

Luwi is set on the ephemeral Luwi River in a remote part of the park with no other camps nearby. There are four tents, each with one bedroom, an open-air bathroom with an outdoor shower and a private open-air seating area. The main area has a lounge, library, bar and campfire. Power is solar, Wi-Fi is in the tents only, and the transfer is about a two-hour game drive from Mfuwe Airport.

Time + Tide calls Luwi the home of the original walking safari, and walking is the reason to come. There are hides, including one over a permanent oxbow lagoon with resident hippos, plus morning and afternoon drives and an optional sleepout. The area is known for lion and wild dog, with roan, eland and hartebeest further upriver. Nsolo is about 9.5 km away on foot, so many guests walk between the two before ending at a river camp.

Luwi suits experienced safari travelers and keen walkers who want time on foot with a small group and a lot of space. With only four tents, space is limited, so plan early for the busiest dry-season months. It opens only from 20 May to 15 November, and because it is remote and simple, we would pair it with a more comfortable river camp rather than use it as the only stop in the valley.

Luwi is a four-tent bushcamp deep in South Luangwa on the seasonal Luwi River, and we recommend it as the most walking-focused camp in the Time + Tide group. It suits travelers who want to explore on foot with no other camps nearby.
