The camp has six tents, including a family unit, each with an en-suite bathroom and outdoor shower. The central area has a lounge with an open fire, a dining area and a pool on a raised deck facing the pan. The setting is teak woodland, grassland and Kalahari sand in the same area as the Ngamo Plains, which fill with plains game and predators in the summer.
Game drives run morning and evening, and the log-pile hide lets you watch elephants and buffalo at the pan from a few meters away without being seen. You can spend a night on the Star Bed at Madison Pan, and the camp can arrange a visit to the Scorpion Anti-Poaching Unit. Sable, roan, cheetah and wild dog are all possible. Two or three nights pairs well with a stay at Linkwasha or Davison's.
Little Makalolo suits couples and travelers who prefer a smaller, simpler camp. The highest rates run from June to October, when the waterhole is busiest. Mornings and evenings in the dry season can be cold in open vehicles, so pack warm layers. With only six tents, it fills early for the dry season, and it is less suited to big groups than Linkwasha.
Wilderness Little Makalolo is a small, classic tented camp in the private Makalolo area of south-eastern Hwange, with a log-pile hide right on its waterhole. It is the more traditional of the Wilderness camps here and well suited to couples.
