Lamai sits on the Kogakuria Kopje in the far north of the Serengeti, just south of the Kenya border, with views over the Mara River valley. It has 12 rooms split between a main camp of ten and a separate private camp of two, plus Mkombe's House next door for groups. The rooms are open-fronted and tucked between granite boulders, and there is a pool looking over the plains.
The camp is about 45 minutes by road from Kogatende airstrip. The migration usually reaches this area from about July to October, and the Mara River is a short drive away for crossings, although none are ever guaranteed. Outside migration season the area still has resident lion, leopard and elephant. Guided walks are possible, best from August to October when the grass is short.
Lamai suits couples and families with older children who want a well-run camp in the heart of migration country. Children aged eight and up are welcome. The paths between rooms are steep with many steps, so it is not a good fit for anyone with limited mobility. The camp closes for the long rains in April and May.
Lamai Serengeti is a small Nomad Tanzania camp built among the boulders of a kopje in the far northern Serengeti, and we recommend it for its position near the Mara River during the migration. It suits travelers who want to be close to the river crossings from about July to October.
