In 1864 Johannes Badrutt told a group of English summer guests that they would enjoy a winter in St. Moritz, and offered to cover their costs if they did not. They stayed until Easter, and the winter season was born. The hotel is still a classic Engadin grand hotel, with traditional rooms, a spa, and its own country club and natural ice rink beside the park.
The funicular to Corviglia is a few minutes' walk from the hotel, and Corvatsch and Diavolezza are a short drive away. In winter the Cresta Run, the toboggan run that started here in 1885, and the bobsleigh track are on the doorstep. In summer there is hiking, biking and sailing on the lake. St. Moritz pairs well with Zermatt on the Glacier Express or with Lake Como by road.
The Kulm suits couples and families who like a traditional hotel with real history. The style is formal and classic. Like Badrutt's Palace down the road, it opens for a winter and a summer season and closes in between, so check dates before you plan.
Kulm Hotel St. Moritz grew from a guesthouse that Johannes Badrutt took over in 1856, and it is where Alpine winter tourism is said to have begun. It sits at the top of town above the lake, next to the Cresta Run and the Olympic bobsleigh track.
